Brigitte Radecki

I am completely committed to abstract painting. Although I have been very interested in its history and in particular certain artists, I am not interested in continuing its traditions. By manipulating certain conventions of historical abstraction such as the monochrome, the all-over web of the surface and the gesture, I am attempting to find an unclaimed space within which to work and to discover new meaning.

During the past few years, my strategy has been to re-introduce metaphor — to disrupt the self-sufficiency of the pure and silent monochrome by long and descriptive titles. I’m hoping that metaphorically as well, meaning is not immediately understood but comes slowly from “underneath” or when taking a different viewpoint. Thus, the viewer becomes an active participant in both the actual perception of the painting but also in their interpretation. Although I am not anxious to make a politically charged statement with these works, I would not be against a reading of contamination, sadness, loss and memory.
