Gillian Turnham is a Muslim-Canadian artist residing in Peterborough, Ontario. Her early work investigated elements of structure and embellishment through architectural miniature. Out of a desire to integrate her creative and faith-based practices, her focus turned to Islamic geometry. She has received training and mentorship from some of the world’s premiere educators in Islamic geometric design, including pattern analysis and ruler-and-compass construction methodologies. Her hand-rendered patterns position classical geometry and manuscript illumination techniques within a contemporary Fine Art context.
Following recent international successes in Turkey and the US, Gillian will be exhibiting throughout 2026-2028 in Canada, Istanbul, and London. In addition to exhibitions and commissioned works, she teaches Islamic geometric pattern construction through The King’s Foundation School of Traditional Arts in London, England. She has delivered guest lectures on the contemporary relevance of traditional Islamic art at universities in Canada, Egypt, and the US. She is also a member of the [GAAC] Collective: a select group of visual artists from across the nation making vibrant contributions to the contemporary world of Geometric Abstraction.
