Blaise DeLong

“Colour is what my painting is about and the forms it takes arise intuitively. Some paintings reveal themselves quickly, most involve a longer exploration. I like to build up surfaces, to make a painting where planes of colour meet and animate each other and where evidence of previous decisions remains.

For me a painting is successful if at some time in its making I can surprise myself, step aside and let the act of painting take over. Above all, my work is a meditation, an effort to distill experience.”

‘Blaise creates her vision, reflected in each painting, with a dedication of spirit that demands a careful application and revision. They are intuitive constructs on a formal level yet have a certain relaxed feel to the application of paint somewhat like the experience of coming home to a welcoming place or like layered blocks or rather coloured cards perched, suspended in the air in front of each other, they jockey for full frontal space, as individuals do for a group photograph.

It is a game; it is a vision that seems to be totally without reference to any recognizable thing yet could be looking at buildings from above where you can see over, between and through, some hidden, some high, some narrow. Given a scene like that you want to look between to what is beyond. This is an artist whose intellectual and visual game is played with utter concentration and intensity preserving the integrity of the concept of abstraction in full.’  – Sheila Mudrick
