Heidi Spector, Joy and Sorrow, 2020, Galerie de Bellefeuille, Montreal, Quebec

Art is my way of connecting with the world and a language through which I express ideas and emotions that often live beyond words. In my geometric minimalist paintings and sculptures, I explore peace, balance, and positivity through repetition, line, colour, and reflection. My goal is simple yet profound: to create a space of calm where both viewer and artist can find a shared sense of solace. I like to think of it as a quiet advancement of the spirit.

When I began this body of work, I was deeply influenced by minimalist masters like Frank Stella, Guido Molinari, Yves Klein, and others. Stella’s phrase, “What you see is what you see,” pushed me to approach my work without overt emotion and to simply explore material, shape, and surface. My intention was to let form and colour speak for themselves.

But as the work evolved, I realized that emotion still found its way in, subtly, but undeniably. Through candy-coloured acrylics, glossy resin on birch, and mirrored stainless steel, the pieces began to invite participation. Reflections, vibrations, and colour interactions created moments of optimism for the viewer and for myself. These responses revealed that my minimalist language had emotional weight, rooted in my own desire for joy, clarity, and connection.

Music plays a vital role in my studio practice. I work while immersed in loud techno, rock, jazz, reggae; each genre influencing my palette and flow. The result is a kind of audio-visual experience, where sound and sight meet in rhythm and colour.

Looking ahead, I remain committed to expanding this visual dialogue and offering viewers not only a visual experience but a moment of presence, clarity, and peace.
